With the recent flurry of handheld devices in the market that boast of rich screens and long battery lives, it seems that these devices are here to stay and will only improve with time. But they will face a problem as the memory modules used currently are not enough when the future will demand 3D graphics and high resolutions.

To counter this problem, Rambus has announced the Mobile Memory Initiative (MMI) that promises to bring in new technologies which will provide the required power. Interestingly, these new memory units will be using the same techniques that are used by XDR memory units in PS3 and will provide up to 4.3 GB/s speed up from the current 800 mb/s used in mobile devices today.

Lots of companies have showed interest, though Rambus has not come out with the list of prospective partners yet. But it has said that the first product based on this will come out somewhere around 2010.
